Club Championship

 Congratulations to all the winners.....

There was some question as to using the course handicap which has been used all year this season and the USGA handicap... so here is the comparison. The places did not change.

What is the golden rule of golf?

Play the ball as it lies. Don't move, bend, or break anything growing or fixed, except in fairly taking your stance or swing. Don't press anything down.

Golf Rules:   bunker shots...https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules-hub/topics/bunkers.html  is a good short video about the rules to watch.

You get free relief in a bunker when you have interference from an abnormal course condition (such as a drain or steps, temporary water, and ground under repair). If you want to take relief for an unplayable lie, you have the three standard one penalty stroke relief options of stroke and distance, back-on-the-line between the ball and the hole, or lateral relief within two club-lengths, except that you must drop your ball in the bunker for options two and three. Plus you have an additional fourth option, this time for two penalty strokes, that allows you to get out of the bunker by going back-on-the line between the ball and the hole as far back as you’d like.

The red stakes on a golf course indicate a lateral water hazard. A lateral water hazard is different from a normal water hazard for it is lateral or it runs alongside the line of play. Simply put, a normal water hazard runs across the line of play while the lateral water hazard runs adjacent to the line of play
The red lines on a golf course also indicate a lateral water hazard.
It is worth noting that a single body of water hazard could have its side marked differently depending on whether its parts run adjacent or across the line of play. That is to say a water hazard could have a yellow stake or line from one side and a red stake or line from the other side depending on its position and coverage on a golf course.
*You either play your ball (if possible) or apply the one-stroke penalty and take a drop for having your ball in a lateral water hazard.
*There are two options to drop a ball in this scenario. One is by dropping your ball within two club lengths of the point where the ball crosses or touches the hazard, no nearer the hole. The other is to go to the opposite side of the lateral water hazard and drop your golf ball at a spot on the hazard’s margin that is equidistant from the hole. All of these are explained in detail in Rule 26.

July 6th

If you can't find your original ball within three minutes of searching, it is then determined to be lost. Unfortunately, now you must take the stroke-and-distance penalty for this and return to the tee or where you last played your shot from.

This is the LOCAL rule for SUNHILLS  men's and ladies league play.

The player  can either return to the spot of the previous shot in the event of a lost ball or a ball out of bounds, OR the player can NOW take a drop in the nearest spot of the fairway (within two club-lengths of the edge of the fairway), no nearer the hole than where the ball crossed the OB line or was lost, with a two-stroke penalty.

example. hit  1-   ball is lost.,  replace in fairway  add 2, so you would be hitting  your 4th shot.

The main rule of golf is to play fair. Even on the back cover of the rule book it states to 1) play the course as you find it 2) play the course as it lies and 3) if you can't do either, do what is fair. So fairness is a key to golf. There will be times when playing golf that you are tempted to cheat. Standing out in the woods and your ball is right behind a tree, the temptation to kick the ball over a few feet to get a good shot. Don't do it! Golf is a game of etiquette and conscience. The game will be more rewarding if you always play by the rules and play fair.

What is the new OB rule in golf?       “When a player's ball has not been found or is known or virtually certain to be out of bounds, the player may proceed as follows rather than proceeding under stroke and distance. For two penalty strokes, the player may take relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in this relief area (see Rule 14.3):

Q.  I played a ball that is not mine – what do I do?

A.In match play, you incur a loss of hole penalty. In stroke play, you get a two-stroke penalty and must correct your mistake by playing your ball (see Rule 6.3(1)). If your ball is lost, then you must proceed under stroke and distance.

Rule:  Where to place your ball between the Tee Markers-- review.  Where can I tee it from? Your ball must be between the two markers, but you can stand outside. You may tee your ball up to two club-lengths behind the markers, but not an inch in front. Your front foot can be in front of the markers, though.

for your review-  What to do if you miss hit from the tee- if the ball lands back on the tee box you can  tee it up on the second shot...    https://youtu.be/xjDD0Z99m9c

President Welcome Letter....

Hi there Ladies!  With the snow on the ground outside, it’s hard to believe that golf season is just around the corner, but before you know it we’ll be out there enjoying our favorite sport!  I can hardly wait! Mark your calendars now, because our opening social/ice breaker fun scramble will be on Wednesday, April 6th and regular league play will begin the next week.  Remember that you are responsible for making your own tee times each week..

This year’s league registration form is attached to this email.  Please fill it out and get it to me no later than March 31st.  If you have any golfing friends or know of anyone who would like to join our awesome league, please forward the info to them as well!  A copy of our Plays of the Days for this season is also attached.

Good news – The Ringer Book is back!!  It cost an additional $5.00 for anyone who wants to join that competition. You can either pay your $5 the first day you play league, or new this year, you can add it to your registration dues and send it in with them.  For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s a quick rundown on what the ringer competition is all about:

The Ringers competition is a fun little challenge that lasts all season.  It allows players to better their own score on each hole over the season.  At the end of the season, all of your best scores for each hole are calculated to give one 18-hole score.  The more rounds you play, the better chance you have to improve your hole by hole score and your final Ringer’s score.  Each player will be responsible for keeping track of their own ringer scores in the ringer book that will be available on the Ladies Association table.

 Special Notes:

*Just a reminder .... All members of the Sun Hills Ladies Golf Association must have an active 18-hole UGA handicap.  -NO EXCEPTIONS-   Handicaps must be established no later than May 31, 2022.

*We will again be having our closest to the hole contests each week.  Please make sure that you each have a measuring tape in your bag, so you can use it to measure your distance to the hole.

*A new POD (Play of the Day) schedule will be posted to the blog and put up at the course.  (I've also attached a copy to this email)  There will also be a sign put up at the check in desk, reminding you of the specific play of the day for that day.

*At the closing social we voted that we would no longer have to fill out the little POD sheets each week.  Please just put your signed scorecard in the container on the Ladies table after your round and I’ll take care of the rest.

* The play of the day fee is $4 per week again this year.

* Just a reminder, the following rule was approved by the league last year:  Tuesday is designated as an optional day to play for the league.  We would still prefer you to play on Wednesday, if at all possible, but the new option means that if you cannot play on Wednesday of a specific week, for any reason, you can play the Tuesday before and it will still count as league play.  (You still need to pay the $4 POD fee).  However, those who play on Tuesday will not get a chance to play for closest to the hole that week.  You will need to make your own tee time and you must play with another member of the league.

*Mike wanted me to let you know that Sun Hills has raised their rates across the board by $1 per nine holes. The punch passes are still by far the best deal.
