Lining up the putt on a beautiful day to playL

Friday, September 25, 2020

Letter from the Board.

Hi there ladies!  With the craziness of 2020 .... I am so glad we ended up being able to have a league and play some golf this year; even though we didn't get to have the socials!  Here's hoping that we'll get to do more of that next season!   Thank you to all of you dedicated ladies that help make our league a success!  And thank you for sticking with us through this very strange and stressful season!

The weather is absolutely beautiful right now!  Perfect golf weather if you ask me!  I've talked with Mike, and we have decided that we will continue

to have league play through the end of October ... weather permitting.  So if the weather suddenly turns cold ... we'll have to call it quits for a few months.  So if we are lucky, we might be able to get five more weeks of play in.  Yippee!

However, since the number of ladies coming out right now is a little lower, for the remainder of this season, we will be combining the nine and eighteen hole leagues together for the play of the day payouts.  Our 18 hole players can continue to play 18 holes, but the play of the day will be figured out on only the nine holes that our nine holers are playing that day.   That will enable us to have a few more ladies in each flight and make the pay out a little easier to figure out each week.  Thank you for your understanding.

Because of the COVID-19 restrictions still in place, we will be unable to have a closing social this year.   We haven't used much of the money in our account this year because of the restrictions, so we will leave all the remaining money in our account, and use it next year.  We will lower our yearly dues to just $25 next year.  Then we will add those dues to what we have left this year and use it to run the league and hopefully have socials next season!   Since we are not having a closing social, we will be unable to select new officers in the usual manner.   However, if there are any of you ladies who are interested in being an officer for this league next year, please respond to this email and let me know.  If we have volunteers, we will have a vote via email.

Also, just a reminder that if you have any winnings left in your account from last season, they need to be spent in the clubhouse by the end of this month; so by September 30th.  Any money you were lucky enough to win this year can be kept in your account and carried over until next year to spend.

If any of you have any questions, suggestions, or complaints, please respond to this email with those as well.  We would love to expand our league and make it one that everyone wants to play on.  So if you have friends who like to golf, invite them to join us next year.  The more the merrier!

Thanks bunches guys!

Let me apologize in advance for the "BOOK" of a message that follows .... but it had to be done.  😵

Hi again ladies!!!  I hope you and your family are all doing well and staying safe.  Well, I think it's finally time to start our golf league!!  YAY!!!!!  I am so ready.  Our first official day of league golf will be Wednesday, May 6th!

Mike has worked closely with the Davis County Health Department and has taken many mandatory steps to ensure our safety.  Still, if you feel that it is too soon for you to start, we totally understand.  I went out last week and felt very safe, and honestly, the outdoors, the sunshine, and having a golf club in my hand really lifted my spirits.  It's so easy to get depressed during this scary time.

However, after discussing many things with Mike and my board, we have decided that there are going to have to be some changes this year .... at least for now.

        * We have decided that there will be no ringer book this year.  There are still clubhouse restrictions, and we are trying to make everything else work with the new requirements.  The ringer book is just one thing we can't make work this year.  With social distancing, and trying to keep things sanitized, we just think we will all be much safer if we just skip it this year.

        * At the current time, there will be no closest to the hole each week.  We can't have everyone touching and moving the marker all over.

        * We will have to do things a little differently this year with turning our scorecards in at the end of the round.  Just inside the front door of the clubhouse, there will be a big table.  On that table will be a sign announcing the play of the day.  We ask that only one member of your group come inside the clubhouse, if at all possible, and pick up a scorecard and a green sheet for each player.  Then, when the round is over, before going inside the clubhouse, each person will fill out their green sheet.  Then one person of the group will take the scorecard and all the green sheets inside, will staple them together, and put them in the glass jar.  This will minimize the amount of time anyone will have to spend inside.

        * There will be an updated handicap sheet posted on the front door each week, so ladies can check their handicap without going inside the clubhouse.

        * Everyone must make their own tee time in advance, via phone.  You can only make reservations two days in advance.  So you will need to call on Monday to make your Wednesday tee time.

        * The play of the day fee is $4 again this year.  When you call to make your tee time, you will need to give your credit card info to the clubhouse to pay your weekly dues ... you can also pay for your golf at that time.  Mike is charging everyone the senior rate at this time.  So with a cart, it will cost you $40 to play 18 holes or $20 to play nine.  Mike will figure out a way for you to use your punch pass, if you'd like.  Or, you can just pay with your credit card, when you pay the $4, and save your punch pass for when things get a little more normal.

Just a reminder ... Mike worked closely with the Health Department to ensure the safest environment for all of us.  So here are the current rules at the golf course:

        - Tee times are 10 minutes a part, to allow for better social distancing.
        - No cash is accepted at this time.
        - The Pro shop will be closed to the public, except for the bathroom.
        - Only one customer at a time will be allowed in the clubhouse.
        - Cafe will have a limited menu.  They will deliver to you at the turn or outside on the patio.  (Credit Cards Only)
        - Flag Sticks must remain in the hole.
        - No rakes in sand traps.  Play preferred lies (one club length).
        - There will be no ball washers on the course.
        - The on course bathroom will be open, but please take precautions when using it. They will be disinfecting it once per hour.
        - One rider to a cart (unless living in the same household).
        - Golf carts will be disinfected and sanitized after each use.
        - Please help by emptying your cart of all trash.
        - Please be safe and practice sound social distancing.
        - If you have any symptoms of a cold or virus - STAY HOME!

Hi there ladies!  Wow!  It has been a scary few weeks!  And unfortunately, things are still pretty sketchy!  I've been working closely with my board and Mike at Sun Hills.   Mike has decided to open up the course this weekend and give it a go, but there are many restrictions in place.  We were thinking about going ahead and starting the league next Wednesday ..... However, I've spoken to several women on the league and there are quite a few of them that just do not feel safe golfing at this time.  And then yesterday, Davis County issued a mandate for all Davis county residents to stay at home!  With that being said, I've spoken to Mike again, and it has been decided that we will hold off on starting the league for now.  If all goes well, we are hoping to start the first week in May, on May 6th.  But we will let you know for sure when it gets closer.

After speaking to several ladies, I think the number of ladies we would be getting out right now would be very low.  And we don't want anyone to be rushed into doing something they aren't ready to do.  So, if any of you feel safe doing so, and would like to go play a round of golf, please support Sun Hills.  Mike has met with the Davis County Health Department and is making many changes to make sure it is as safe as it can be.  But if you do decide to give it a go .... please be careful and practice social distancing!  We'd hate for any of you to get sick!

So stay home as much as you can, be smart, and stay healthy.  I will be thinking about you all, and you will all be in my prayers!  I look forward to seeing you all when it is safe to be together!  Maybe, since we are starting the league late this year, we can go a little longer in the fall.  We will discuss it when things get going!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send me a message, send me a text, or give me a call!

Sorry folks....

Sun Hills Golfers,

Nothing is as important to us as the health of our guests, community, and staff .
Therefore, Sun Hills Golf Course will be closing effective today, Thursday the 26th of March. Will be assessing the COVID-19 situation daily and will keep you informed via phone message,  email and FaceBook posts on a weekly basis. We hope to be able to open in a short time, but that will depend on how the outbreak progresses.
We apologize for the optimistic email sent earlier this week. We tried to get our facility 100% safe for our employees and the public and found there is just no way to achieve that goal.
Thank you for your understanding and support. We hope to have a great golf season as soon as possible!  Stay safe and healthy!!

letter from SunHills    Mike is working with the Dept. of Health, and Davis County  to try to keep the course open.. Please be patient .. and remember this is temporary... you can use your passes  you just need to call the golf course first....  This is long '---- and  there are 2 emails.   the second explains the leagues play

Sun Hills Golf Course is Staying Open....at least for the time being. We will have the following changes based on the mandates from the Davis County Health Department. As long as these are followed we may be able to stay open.
These are our "Curbside Operating Procedures".
*ALL PLAYERS MUST HAVE A RESERVED TEE TIME.
*ALL TEE TIMES MUST BE PRE PAID BY CREDIT CARD.
*ONLY 1 PERSON IN THE PRO SHOP AT A TIME.
*CARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR 1 RIDER OR 2 RIDERS FROM THE SAME HOUSEHOLD.

Sun Hills wants to keep our employees safe and keep our customers and community safe by following these procedures-

-Tee times are mandatory, No walk ons. (Singles-call the pro shop for instructions)
-Tee times will be spaced out to every 12 minutes. (Less Crowded)
-Reservation can be made through our website (sunhillsgolf.com) and either go to Book a Tee Time, or on the top menu, Fast Tee Times. Follow the procedures for either way to prebook and prepay online.
-We will be taking reservations only 2 days in advance. (mostly in order to see what the weather is going to be so we don't have a lot of cancellations and refunds or rainchecks going out).
-Or Call the Pro Shop to reserve  and pay at that time over the phone. (This is the only way for those with punch passes and discount cards or juniors)  (801)771-4814
- We will have a "Curbside Procedure" for checking in paid players and assigning carts when you get to the front door of the clubhouse.

Our Rates will be more uniform so everyone can pre pay online: $40 green fee with cart on the weekdays, and $44 on Saturday and Sunday. ($26 walking on weekdays and $30 on Weekends. Half of those prices for 9 holes.
For those with punch passes or other discounts, you must call the pro shop and prepay at that time.

Golf carts will be thoroughly washed and sanitized after each use.

The Driving Range will be open. You must enter the proshop and pay with credit card for the range balls.

The Cafe will be telephone orders and credit card payments only. Call the cafe and they will bring the food/drinks to you!! Please support Ralph and his staff at this tough time!!

The Pro Shop Merchandise will be unavailable for now.

We ask for your patience and cooperation with these new procedures. It may take a few days to work out all the kinks. But doing this is better than closing!

Sun Hill Association Member,
You should have received an email just a while ago detailing the new "Curbside Procedures" for the immediate future. I just wanted to clarify what this means for our Association Members. We plan on proceeding with the opening of the season for the Men's Association on March 30, 31. And the Ladies Association on April 8th.
The Procedures will still need to be followed, by calling the pro shop for your tee times and paying with a credit card at that time. You can simply pay the regular rates plus the weekly entry fee. If you have a punch card you may only have to pay the entry fee. It still must be done prior to playing and with a credit card. NO CASH!
The times will only be  available 2 days in advance
Carts will be available, 1 rider unless you are in the same household, or you just drove up with your riding partner.

Ladies- there will not be a social, dinner, or shotgun on the 8th of April. Just start play that day with your regular groups.

Couples League- We will still plan on starting on May 7th, until we hear differently. We can easily take your Entry Fees over the phone as you sign up for your "tee time" even though it is s shotgun. We just need to be very careful about "Social Distancing" when gathering for the instructions and getting tee assignments.

Men's Association Opening Social will be a tee timed event without a meeting afterward. We will be in touch with the process for signing up for that event.

We all hope to get back to normal procedures in a few weeks, but for the time being we have to do things differently to stay open for play.Stay safe and healthy.

Hi there Ladies!  I hope this message finds you and your family all safe and healthy.  This is such a crazy time we are going through right now!  And if you are anything like me ... I was counting down the days until the season golf festivities would begin.  Unfortunately, everyone is having to make necessary changes to their plans.  So now it's our turn.  I have received numerous questions about what our plans are for the league and the social.  After much deliberation with the board and Mike at Sun Hills, this is the plan:

  • Due to the social distancing that is currently needed, there will be no icebreaker tournament, no social, no dinner, and no meeting at this time.  We will have the dinner and meeting part of it when things calm down and it's safe to do so.

  • The golf league will officially begin on April 8th instead of the 15th.  So instead of beginning with the icebreaker, we will just start the league on the 8th.  So make your own tee times and go have some fun!  Being outdoors with friends, golfing is good for our mental state and also pretty safe.  Just stay in groups of four or less.  :)

  • A new POD schedule will be posted to the blog and put up at the course.  There will also be a sign put up at the check in desk, reminding you of the specific play of the day for that day.  In addition, you spoke and we listened, there will be more of a variety of plays of the day, and a few less putting ones.

  • Your opening social gift will be available for pick up at the front desk on the first day you play league.

  • You will also have the option to sign up for the ringer book.  The cost to join the ringer is $5, which will be due at time of signup.  The ringer starting date will be May 6th.  Jan will keep track of it for three weeks or so, until everyone has been out at least once.  Then it will be available in the clubhouse for you to update each time you play.

  • We also need you to respond to this email with a YAY or a NAY on the following proposed change:  We propose that Tuesday be designated as an optional day to play for the league.  What that means is that if you cannot play on Wednesday of a specific week, for any reason, you can play the Tuesday before and it will still count as league play.  However, those who play on Tuesday will not get a chance to play for closest to the hole that week.  You will need to make your own tee time and you must play with another member of the league.

In addition to those things listed above, there is a new World Handicap System that is being implemented this year.  And I'll admit, if you aren't used to playing in tournaments, and figuring out stroke holes, it might be a bit hard to understand, but I'll do my best to explain it.  We were actually going to have Karen Gardiner give us a quick seminar at the opening social, to help everyone understand it a bit better.  Karen Gardiner is on the UGA Board of Directors, and she is actually joining our league this year,  But since we are not having our opening social right away, that isn't going to be a possibility.  So I will sum it up as best I can.  If you have questions when figuring it out, please don't hesitate to ask one of us, Mike, or someone at the golf course for help.

The good news is that for new players to our league, they have until May 27th to get their handicaps established.  Because of that, none of our Plays of the Day will have anything to do with handicap so you won't have to figure anything out right away.

But from June on, we will be using handicaps.  So here goes:

Jan will have a handicap posted at the golf course for everyone to see.  Handicaps will actually change daily now, but that would be impossible for us to keep up with.  But we will change the listing of handicaps each week.  The handicap listed at the course, will be your Course Handicap, so that is the one you will use.

With the new handicap system, the maximum score for each hole played is limited to a net double bogey - which is equal to Par of the hole + 2 strokes (double bogey) + any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive on that hole based on their course handicap.

For example, a player with a course handicap of 12 is entitled to one additional stroke on the 12 hardest holes.   So on a par 4 hole, which is ranked the 2nd hardest hole, the player would receive a stroke on that hole.  So the players maximum score allowed for that hole would be 4 (par) + 2 (double bogey) + 1 (handicap stroke received) = 7.  So for the adjusted score, the player could only take a 7 on that hole.  This will be different for each person.

Please don't be overwhelmed .... I'm overwhelmed enough for all of us.  We will get this figured out and soon it will be second nature.  :)  If you have trouble figuring it out, just ask someone for help.

I hope this letter answers any questions you may have.  If you have any further questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out!  Stay safe and healthy and we'll see you soon!  (And don't forget to respond with a Yay or a Nay about the Tuesday play.  It is a change we'd really like to pass, but just need votes to get it through)

Time to start!!

Spring is almost here... time to PLAY!

Find some friends to join this year...
Hi there Ladies!!!!  Oh my goodness!!!  Spring is just around the corner and I am so ready for golf season to begin!!!  We are having our Icebreaker Scramble and opening social on Wednesday, April 8th, at 4:30/6:30.  For those of you that would like to golf, it is strictly for fun!  Just make your own scramble group and lets go play some golf!  No winners, no losers, just fun, fun, fun!!  We will tee off at 4:30.  Then, we will have dinner afterwards.  For those that can only make dinner and the social, we will be eating at approximately 6:30, with a quick meeting to follow.  We sure hope you can all make it!

Attached you will find a copy of the registration form.  Please fill it out and send it, along with your dues, to Vardell no later than April 1st.  We have lowered the dues back down to $50 this year, which includes a $10 fee for weekly closest to the hole contests.  We would really love our league to grow, so if you have a friend that you think might enjoy our league, please bring them to the social so we can meet them!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!!!
